Both middle-aged patients and geriatric patients experienced improvement in clinical outcome parameters following total ankle arthroplasty, according to results presented at the American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society Annual Meeting, here.
Colleagues found geriatric patients were similar to patients of middle age with regard to both preoperative factors and their improvement in postoperative clinical parameters.
Bariteau and colleagues compared the VAS pain, SF-36 and American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society (AOFAS) ankle and hindfoot scores of 21 patients older than 70 years of age who underwent total ankle arthroplasty for end-stage ankle arthritis with that of 21 patients between the ages of 50 years and 60 years with a minimum of 2-year follow-up.
